Explain the
effect of technology on print
newspapers (4)
Technology has caused print readerships to have a rapid decline on sales of newspapers due to how expensive newspapers are and as a result many newspapers are closing down. Because of this people with careers in this industry are loosing their jobs. Advertising has now heavily moved online so many newspapers have adapted to this to produce online newspapers and completely stopped producing Hard copies. An example of a paper that has moved online exclusively is The Independent. The paper moving online allows a wide audience of people to be targeted and more readership as online media is becoming more accessible to even people with little money.
Notice that although The Observer online follows the structure of the print edition, there is a greater prominence for the lifestyle, food and sport sections that are otherwise kept out of the main section of the print newspaper.

There is also a higher proportion of
photography and headlines on the homepage compared to the front page.
Why might this be? How does this target
different audiences
The reason this is is because it allows more younger age groups and different
diversities to be able to access a variety of preferred online media and on the website
we can see the colours when you hover over the tabs are stereotypically aimed at the
target audiences of those sections E.G. lifestyle is pink. This is also targeted at
younger age groups as it is more online based which older age groups may struggle
to understand.

Instagram doesn't even give much only shows some info and then applies more to a younger audience

Traditionally, people who read audiences were passive. They could choose what
newspaper to buy and could always write to the editor, but would accept the
messages.
Online newspapers attract a far more active audience. The website itself has little
user-generated content and audiences are limited to responding to journalists
although they can do and tend to debate!
The Twitter and Instagram feeds offer content for response.
Remember that neither is moderated, there is much more opportunity for trolling on
these feeds, but they encourage a shorter audience attention span which can
discourage debate.
Online news is NOT regulated! you an freely post unless a newspaper actively signs
up to the regulator.
The guardian only prints based on their contributors and their values (scott trust)
Owners are not expected to interfere with the newspaper however will appoint editors
to be bias
Across all three platforms all people are shared and represented and allowed to give
their opinion on situations in 'the comment is free' section.
The Culture section is only reported via Instagram via the target audience and
celebrities.
The target audience is the same for all social medias apart from Instagram which is
targeted at a younger age group and target audience. Instagram also focuses a lot
more on multiculturalism compared to the other versions such as twitter and
Facebook or the online version, this is because the target audience is so young that
younger age group have been taught these things are correct therefore able to be
targeted to younger audiences.
